appreciation
A Minute for What Is
“Appreciation is a steady glance that names what is already here, no embellishment required.”
The Teaching
Appreciation asks for a soft attention: not a broadcast of thanks, but a steady naming of what is present. When you slow down enough to notice a single small thing—the warmth of a mug, the cadence of someone’s voice, or the firmness of your own feet—you create a tiny island of clarity within the swirl of doing. That clarity does not erase hard feelings; it simply allows them to coexist with other facts. This practice is accessible because it doesn’t require belief or performance. It asks for curiosity and acknowledgment. You do not have to feel ecstatic or grateful in a grand way; you only need to point out one thing you can honestly see and hold it for a breath or two. Over time, these small holds gather into a different kind of perception: one that recognizes texture and detail where before there was only rush. Practicing appreciation is also a skill in restraint. It’s not about creating a list of reasons to be happy or pretending everything is fine. Rather, it is training the attention to be more nuanced—able to carry complexity, to hold both ache and small light at once. The practice is simple, patient, and forgiving: try it when you remember, and try again tomorrow.
Your Practice Today
Set a three-minute timer. Write five things you notice and appreciate—each should be specific and simple (e.g., “the chipped corner of my favorite mug,” “the neighbor’s laughter through the thin wall”). After each, write one sentence about what that thing gives you (comfort, surprise, steadiness).
