Listening is not the same as agreeing
When a conversation matters, it can be easy to start building a reply before the other person has finished speaking. You may be preparing a defense, finding the flaw in what they said, or trying to predict where the conversation is going.
Listening without rehearsing does not mean abandoning your perspective. It means giving yourself a moment to understand what is actually being said before deciding what you think about it.
Notice the moment your reply begins forming
The first step is simple: notice when your attention leaves the other person and moves into preparation. You may feel your body tighten, hear yourself choosing words internally, or start collecting examples.
You do not need to judge that reaction. Just name it silently: I am preparing. That small act can create enough room to return to the conversation.
Reflect back the part you understood
Try a short reflection before you answer: “It sounds like you felt overlooked when that happened,” or “What I am hearing is that you need more notice.”
You are not confirming that every conclusion is correct. You are checking whether you understood the meaning behind the words. A person who feels heard may be more able to hear you in return.
Give your own perspective a clean turn
After reflecting, let yourself respond. You can say, “My experience was different,” or “I want to share what was happening for me.” Listening first does not require you to disappear.
If your reply feels loaded, ask for a pause rather than forcing an immediate answer. A pause can protect both clarity and connection.
Use a question that opens rather than corners
Before you respond, choose one question that helps you understand more: What felt most important about that? What would have helped in that moment? What are you hoping changes now?
